Spring 2008 ME 476:
Second Law Analysis of Engineering Systems

Announcements/Changes to web page:
- 18 June: Final grades are posted on METU-ONLINE under Lecture Notes. Check that I calculated your final average correctly. If you worked in a group for MT2 Pt2, make sure that both of your grades are recorded properly. Email me if you find an error in your grading. Do not email me if want/need a higher grade. Iyi tatiller,
- 17 June:
- After doing some more research today, I am fairly confident that cheating occurred on the project. If nobody comes forward by Thursday and offers an explanation, I will move forward with disciplinary action by myself. Please spread the word to your classmates, as I realize that some students do not check this website or their METU email account regularly.
- Once again, at this point the problem is not widespread but is only a very small group of students.
- 17 June: Önemli
- Over the past month I have been growing increasingly suspicious that a small number of students in 476 are cheating on the exams and projects. For the project, I am specifically concerned about students including their name on a project without contributing and students taking results from another group and presenting them as their own. As I said at the start of the semester, as 4 th year students who will (should) be graduating soon, I am very concerned about METU in general and our department specifically graduating engineers that cannot behave ethically.
- I realize that due to the format of the project (and the class) everything is not black and white in terms of what is acceptable but rather there is a lot of grey area. This is very similar to working as a practicing engineer where you will confront many ethical problems where there is no clear “correct” answer but rather a lot of shades of grey. Also in many cases this semester several of you have come to me with an unusual situation that affected your performance in this class, and I have tended to put a tremendous amount of trust in you that you are being truthful. Overall this attitude makes my life much easier, I think has made your life a lot easier, and prepares you to work as a professional who must act responsibly and take responsibility for their actions. I think the vast majority of you have behaved ethically – if this were not the case I would stop teaching.
- On Thursday after I have finished all my grading I will spend some time investigating these specific cases where I am suspicious. I will likely announce grades assuming that no cheating occurred, but then change the grades and/or refer these students to the Department's Ethics Committee if I find strong evidence of cheating. I will also be very concerned with identifying instances where this is part of a larger pattern of cheating, and thus will be speaking with TA's and other instructors about these students. Note that this situation is particularly serious for students who are planning/hoping to graduate, as we will need to resolve this issue very quickly.
- If you cheated in this class, you can reduce the penalty by contacting me before Thursday either by email or coming by my office to discuss the situation and offer an appropriate solution.
- I will be sending emails to students who did not contact me and with whom I am suspicious Thursday afternoon by email. You are responsible for checking your email (METU account) on Thursday evening and if you receive an email from me to contact me to resolve the problem.
- Once again, right now I see these as isolated instances and are not reflective of the class as a whole.
- 13 June:
- Written make-up exam at 10.00 on Monday in D-101.
- Tmax and gas turbine engines (PDF). This will provide some context for the project
- Corrections/clarifications for project:
- Methane is delivered to the combustion chamber and not the turbine.
- Combustion is complete
- 10 June: Times to look at your final exam added to Calendar.
- 9 June:
- Final exam and current course averages uploaded to METU-Online under Lecture Notes. The attendance weighted average for this course is ~ 65%, which will likely be a CC.
- Make-up Exam Information:
- You can only make-up 1 assignment:
- In class part of MT1 or Final Exam: This will be a written exam equivalent in scope to the final exam and given on 16 June at 10.00 at a location to be announced.
- Take-home for MT1 (project Part 2) or MT2 part 1 (Project Part 3). Since you must be able to do parts 2 and 3 of the project to do part 4, your grade for project part 4 will also be your make-up grade. Thus there is not a separate make-up assignment for the project.
- Anyone can take the make-up, even if you did not have an excused absence or if you completed the assignment but did poorly. However, the final assignment grade for people without an excused absence is the average of your original and make-up grades for that assignment.
- One time when I did this previously a person requested a make-up and then never showed up. This was very uncool as I had spent considerable time and effort preparing the make-up exam. Therefore, if you do worse on the make-up or do not show up, you are wasting my time and I reserve the right to lower your final course letter grade regardless of your final course average.
- To take the make-up exam, you must fill out and sign a request form
and return it to me as follows:
- Written Make-up: Return to me by 10.00 Thursday. I need to know if I need to prepare this exam and for how many people.
- Project: Attach this sheet to the front of your MT2 Pt2 and turn it in on 16 June at 10.00. Therefore you can decide as late as 16 June 9.59 if you want to do this or not.
- 6 June: I will post information about the make-up exam next week. In response to questions from several students
- Anyone can take the make-up
- You can only take 1 make-up (in-class MT1, take-home MT1, MT2 Pt1, MT2 Pt2, or the final). You cannot take multiple make-ups, as this creates too much work for me and makes your work over the semester too irrevelant. I your grade should be based primarily on your semester work.
- It will be comprehensive and similar in scope to the final.
- If I don't see significant improvement I will reserve the right to reduce your letter grade regardless of your final average due to wasting my time (which I think is unethical under these circumstances).
- If you ask to take the make-up but then fail to show up, I reserve the right to reduce your grade due to wasting my time.
- Please wait until I post detailed information next week before asking me any more questions.
